William Miller's Story Season 2 Episode 3 William Miller William Miller was the oldest of 16 children, and he grew up in Lowhampton, New York. His parents were Christian, and growing up he had an insatiable desire to learn and read. He would stay up at night by the light of burning pine nuts, and this drive to self-educate himself soon distinguished him in the area as 1 of the most educated young men. When he reached the age of marriage, he met a young lady named Lucy here in the town of Pulteney, Vermont. After they got married, they moved to this town which also had a library where he was introduced to the authors such as Voltaire, David Hume, and Thomas Paine, all great deists, and William would later himself become a deist.

[♪ music ♪ In 1812, America was at war with England and William, like his father before him, had a strong sense of patriotism and volunteered to fight for his country. A series of events that William could only put down to the providence and protection of God made a deep impression on his mind. As yet though, he was still unconverted, but after his father's death he would often accompany his mother, his wife, and his children to church. He enjoyed his uncle's preaching, and 1 Sunday when his uncle and the stand-in deacon were away, his mother arranged for him to read the sermon. The sermon was about parental duties and the importance of parents setting a good example.

Whilst he was reading, he was struck with tears and he could not finish the reading of the sermon. The inconsistency between his life and the fact that he did not attend church, read, or pray regularly, and yet he encouraged his children to do so, made a deep impression upon his mind. [♪ music ♪ Suddenly the character of the Savior was vividly impressed upon his mind. He later said, God opened my eyes and, O my soul, what a Savior I discovered Jesus to be! William fell in love with Jesus and with the Bible.

He set out to read the Bible and starting in Genesis 1, verse 1, he worked his way methodically through verse by verse. Anytime he came to a word or a verse that he did not understand, he would cross-reference it using his Cruden's Concordance until he was sure he understood what the text meant. Coming to Daniel 8, verse 14, which says, unto 2, 300 days then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. He did not know what this verse meant. Rather than reading on, he stopped there, stayed there, and studied it out, and his conclusions would have a huge and far-reaching impact.

As he continued his study into Daniel 8, he came to the conclusion that Jesus was going to come in about 25 years' time. He studied and re-studied his conclusions over the next several years and came to the conclusion that Jesus was coming around the year 1843. Despite this amazing discovery, he didn't do that much with it. He didn't preach about it. He did write a few articles and share it, but the impression grew upon him to go and tell the world.

Finally, 1 day he made a commitment to God that if he received an invitation to preach, then He would go. He probably felt this was a safe promise to make, as no 1 had asked him to preach over the past 10 years or so. 30 minutes later, roughly, a knock came on his door and his nephew Irving Guilford from Dresden asked him if he would come to his house and share the things that he had been studying. Rather than being happy that his prayer was answered, he stormed out the front door. [♪ music ♪ He walked out his house to the maple grove behind me and paced up and down.

He was under conviction and couldn't reason his way out of this 1. You see, his nephew lived quite a distance from his house, which meant he would have to have left before he made the prayer of commitment to God. Thus he knew this was the moving of the Spirit upon his life to even make that commitment, and as he had made that promise to God, eventually he surrendered and agreed to preach. As the sign and 1 historian said, he went in a farmer and came out a preacher. 🎵 Music 🎵 After accepting this call to preach, he travelled extensively over the next 10 years, travelling all over the northeastern part of the United States, taking his prophecy charts with him and then opening his Bible.

Many were converted, and this revival wasn't limited to a particular denomination. Although Miller was a Baptist, he preached in churches of various persuasions, with some historians estimating that he won as many as 40, 000 to the Methodist Church and 45, 000 to the Baptist Church. It was before the year 1843 that he linked up with Joshua V. Himes, who was an excellent publicist, thus broadening his reach from the spoken word to the written word as well. [♪ music ♪ Maybe God is calling you to ministry, to sacrifice what you're doing and step out in faith.

Maybe you've been resisting the call like William resisted the call for around 10 years. I want to assure you that the best place to be is safe in the peace that you're not resisting the Holy Spirit and you're where God wants you to be and you're following His will for your life. If God is calling you, then step out in faith and let Him lead. ♪♪ ♪♪ ♪♪
