The Greatest Mass in History After over the Passover week, Jesus met his disciples here in Galilee by the lake. It was in this area that Jesus spent most of his time with his disciples, and the memories of feeding the 5000, being called to follow Jesus, walking on water, and the little town of Capernaum would have been fresh in their minds. As they arrived, Peter proposed that they go fishing for the night, but despite their competence as fishermen, they caught nothing. [♪ music ♪ Jesus was then standing on the shore and he called out and asked them if they had caught anything, to which they answered no. He then tells them to throw their nets onto the right side of the boat.

John then realizes that this is Jesus and tells Peter. Peter then is so excited he jumps out of the boat and swims to shore. The rest of the disciples are now left in the boat, desperately trying to bring it to shore with their now huge catch of fish, which was another miracle that Jesus performed. [♪ music ♪ Arriving here at the shore of the lake, Jesus has a fire of coals ready with some loaves and fishes, and asks them to dine. Here the setting is very important.

Coals are only mentioned twice in the book of John. Here in chapter 21, and previously in John chapter 18, when Peter was warming himself at a fire of coals when he denied Jesus. Here he has a physical reminder of that terrible night. Jesus asked Peter if he loves him more than these, to which Peter responds, yes Lord, you know that I love you. Peter previously had said that he would love Jesus more than anyone else, but now he humbly replies, Yes, Lord, I love you.

[♪ Music ♪ Jesus then asked a second time, Do you love me? To which he gets the response, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. Jesus then asked Peter the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me? The Bible says in John chapter 21 and verse 17 that Peter is grieved that he has asked the third time, and he says, Yes, Lord, you know all things. You know that I love you.

And once again he is told to feed my sheep. This story really comes to life when you understand the different Greek words for love. [♪ music ♪ 2 of them are used in this passage, agape and phileo. The first time Jesus asks Peter and says, Peter, do you agape love me? To which Peter responds, Lord, I phileo love you.

Jesus then asks him a second time, Peter, do you agape love me? To which Peter responds, Lord, I phileo love you. You see, agape is like the divine kind of love, and maybe Jesus was testing Peter out to see how humble he was. The third time he says, Peter, do you phileo love me? To which Peter responds, Lord, you know that I phileo love you.

Peter says, Lord, you know that's all I can give. That's the only love I have, and that's the love I will give to you, and I give it to you today. [♪ music ♪ Peter had previously said that though others forsake you, he wouldn't. He had been bold and brash in his outward display of love and affection, but Now he knows his weakness and shows humility in front of the other disciples. They know that he is truly sorry, and they witness Jesus lovingly restore him.

Peter had experienced deep anguish the night after he denied Jesus 3 times, and now they see Jesus accept his repentance and lovingly restore him. Many people resonate with Peter For in him we see our brash and impetuous selves. We see our pride and lack of humility in Peter, but seeing how Jesus lovingly restores him gives us hope that even after we have let our Saviour down, He tenderly and kindly seeks us out. No 1 should ever be scared to approach God and come to Him. The Bible says in Proverbs that a righteous man falls 7 times and then rises.

Peter fell but Jesus lifted him back up and he will restore us today when we humbly come to Him in prayer. You
